Overview

The innovative Co-Curriculum program at Madeira integrates experiential learning with the cultural, political, and business life of the nation’s capital. Through this internship program, girls learn from real-world experience, graduating with a solid resume that rivals that of college students. The unique grade-level objectives of the Co-Curriculum program progress from learning about identity and community during freshman and sophomore years to experiencing “real-life work” and leadership training during junior-year internships in Capitol Hill offices and student-selected internships during the girls’ senior year.

Academics

Summary: Deep learning crosses disciplines at Madeira. Girls have the opportunity to make connections between STEAM courses and courses in the humanities, between learning a language and learning a new art form, between classroom learning and experiential learning. Our curriculum relies on excellent teaching and students who play an active role in choosing their academic paths. Our focus on experiential learning through a renowned four-year Co-Curriculum program sets us apart. And our modular schedule provides a framework that gives students the discipline to absorb and reflect while encouraging active student engagement, collaboration, and experiential problem solving.

Summary: The college admission process, rather than being the main focus of a girl’s time at Madeira, is instead a natural consequence of the rigorous secondary education that Madeira provides. Our college counselors work individually with each student, as well as her family, to make her aware of the full range of college options and ultimately to help her find one that continues to challenge her academically and aligns with her interests, values, and career goals. Counselors also maintain the Madeira tradition of fostering confident risk takers while keeping the realities of current higher education practices in mind.
