Salisbury School sits on a beautiful hilltop in northwestern Connecticut approximately two hours from the heart of New York City. A Salisbury education combines academic rigor and support. Our 17 AP classes and the long-established Rudd Learning Center are good examples of our commitment to and understanding of educating boys and their learning styles. The unique Residential Life Program builds community pride and unity through shared experience and service. The new academic (Centennial Humanities Building, Wachtmeister Mathematics and Science Building) and athletic facilities (Flood Athletic Center)are second-to-none for a school our size. Each Salisbury boy gains the enthusiasm for learning and self-confidence needed for intellectual, spiritual, physical and moral development. Summary: For many students, attending Salisbury School will be their first experience being away from home and the first time they must be responsible for their own lives. Boarding is not always easy, but adjustments are often stress-free because of our close-knit community of peers and adults who have respect for and care about one another. Summary: Salisbury has approximately 284 boarding students and 20 day students representing 29 states and 18 foreign countries. Since most students reside on campus, Salisbury's director of student activities works with students to offer a variety of events each weekend. A sample of activities includes: dances with area girls' schools, shuttle to movie theaters, skiiing/snowboarding trips, play performances, Salisbury coffee house, annual carnival, visiting comedians, trips to laser tag and paint ball, community service opportunities, trips to local shopping malls, professional sporting events, amusement park visits, and fan buses to Salisbury athletic events.

Summary: One of our fundamental responsibilities is to help our students select colleges that best match their abilities, interests and overall personal records. Salisbury encourages boys to begin preliminary college planning late in the Fourth Form year. In January of their Fifth Form, the School hosts a symposium for students and their parents with admissions officers from some of the nation’s most elite colleges and universities. By spring, each fifth former will have had numerous meetings with his college advisor and developed a list of schools to visit. Beginning in the fall of their sixth form/senior year, boys work closely with the College Office to narrow their list of choices and organize applications. As admission to the most selective colleges continues to be increasingly competitive, Salisbury is proud of its record of matriculating over 60% of recent graduating classes to colleges classified as “most competitive” or “highly competitive” and sending 80% of the Sixth Form to their first choice schools. Salisbury strives to make the college advising process a partnership between a boy, his parents and the School. We offer guidance, resources and tools to make this individually-tailored selection process as easy as possible. Our ultimate goal is, of course, to ensure that students select colleges where they will be successful, challenged, and happy.

Summary: Since 1946, Salisbury Summer School has been working with boys and girls in grades 8-12 who have recognized that they need to improve their study skills and general approach to learning. The study techniques and disciplines that we teach can be applied effectively to all aspects of a student’s academic life. Our faculty members use a highly structured curriculum to help students become effective learners while also making that experience enjoyable and rewarding. Although our traditional academic program focuses on Reading and English, we offer several additional programs including: make-up credit in Math, instruction in English as a Second Language (ESL) for young scholars from other countries wishing to study in the United States, and an optional course in SAT preparation to complement the SAT instruction that we include within our current curriculum. We allow some students to study on campus as day students and go home at night following study periods and other school obligations. Our afternoon activities program includes arts and crafts in addition to many other offerings.

Summary: The strengths and attributes of a single-sex education on the Hilltop are easy to highlight. Our insights are garnered mostly from the living proof of the 300 boys that we work with on a daily basis: our charges in the classrooms, the dormitories, and the theater and on the fields and over the weekends. This is a special place to learn, play and grow. We know and understand young men, and celebrate what it means to be a boy! Generally, we find that it is the boy who makes the mature decision to attend Salisbury instead of a rival coed school. He feels the camaraderie and the kinship, and is attracted by the high quality academic program, the nurturing environment, the leadership opportunities, and the healthy social environment that is short on pretense and posturing. Salisbury can greatly impact a young man’s academic, social and co-curricular lives because we focus on a single gender. In a one hundred year tradition, we provide boys with an educational environment that is uncomplicated, and one in which we know who we are and do what we say we do; the superfluous gets deleted, and we focus on core values and high standards. We are a school that recognizes and works with a young man’s academic and developmental needs. As identified in our mission statement, we educate young men by inspiring in each student an enthusiasm for learning and the self-confidence needed for intellectual, spiritual, physical, and moral development. We want every boy to achieve, and to have fun doing it! Truly, Salisbury School is a unique place. Our setting, size, and mission set us apart.
